Why We Are Needed
- In 2013, 11.2% of Minnesota’s population lived below the Federal poverty guideline: 592,000 individuals;
- Since 2007, the population of eligible low-income clients has increased 20.6%, while the number of attorneys at legal aid programs has decreased 16% because of funding cuts;
- Two out of every three low income clients are turned away because of lack of resources; and
- Volunteer law students leverage staff attorney time allowing them to serve more clients and to focus their attention on more complicated cases. For example, the use of volunteer students at the Consumer Division of Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid allows them to double their client services.
